Natural Gas Marketing, you make the choice!

Many Western New Yorkers have been hearing more and more about the opportunity to purchase natural gas from a natural gas marketer. Just like our telephone, cellular phone, and electric and cable companies, we all have choices now to purchase these commodities.

When it comes to choosing a natural gas marketer, here are some guidelines and important steps to take:

Step One - Ask Questions!

  • Is the marketer a “qualified supplier” by your local gas utility and by the New York State Public Service Commission?
  • How many years in business?
  • How many local customers?
  • How many employees?
  • Local office?
  • Financial security?

Step Two - Buyer Beware!
When we make any important purchase, we need to be cautious. Here are some tips:

  • Get a detailed explanation of the rates.
  • Any additional charges?
  • Monthly fees?
  • Annual fees?
  • Taxes?
  • Late fees?
  • Cancellation fee?

Step Three - Making the Decision
Critical stage, you need to take some time to review the contract.

  • Understand the contract terms and conditions.
  • Understand the billing process.
  • Make sure customer service is available.

We all want to make educated and safe decisions. The Utility will continue to read your meter, handle emergencies and maintain the gas pipelines. Natural gas marketers will be able to give you pricing choices and options. Understanding your options is the key to making a sound decision.
