WYOMING COUNTY CHAMBER & TOURISM CELEBRATES THE 110th ANNIVERSARY OF THE WYOMING COUNTY SPCA WITH A RIBBON CUTTING

Aug 29, 2015

The Wyoming County Chamber and Tourism office was pleased to celebrate a ribbon cutting on Saturday, August 29, 2015 with new board members, supporters, and friends, at the Wyoming County SPCA 110th Anniversary open house and celebration at the Attica shelter location.

“We are very pleased to join with the board of directors to celebrate the 110th Anniversary of the Wyoming County SPCA,” said Scott Gardner, Wyoming County Chamber President. “Congratulations on this historical milestone and best wishes as you shape the organization into the future.”

“We are very pleased to welcome the community to the SPCA to celebrate our 110th anniversary. Our road has been a long one, but our commitment is true,” said Brian Baker, Board President. “Our struggle with past reputation and finances have been overwhelming at times, but as a board, we have worked hard to stay on track and to focus only on the future and keeping the past in the past. Our support comes only from donations and fundraisers as we are an all-volunteer organization. It is with the sincerest hope that we can count on the support of the community.”

Following a reorganization of the board in late 2014, the board agreed to revitalize the Attica based shelter.  Since January of this year, they have made a number of repairs to the building including the repair of the sump pump system and removal of mold and water damage to walls, installation of a water softener system, moving the animal records to an electronic record keeping system, repairing the dog kennels, decreasing the cat population by 34% and finding homes for 102 animals.

They have also taken measures to improve the routine care of the cats at the shelter. All animals of age are spayed or neutered, given rabies and distemper vaccines, FIV/FeLv tested, vaccinated for three common feline viruses and given a monthly topical application of ear mite/worm/flea medication. They have also implemented a plan to assure that all dogs receive rabies and distemper vaccines and are given a monthly topical application of ear mite/worm/flea medication.

The all-volunteer board is actively working to build “colony rooms” for late summer or early fall, repair and upgrade the ventilation system (this coincides with the colony room construction), and continue to reduce the cat population. Other areas under repair are the dog kennels, office and board room. The long term goal is to have a new building designed specifically to provide temporary housing for cats and dogs. This new building would provide a healthy and enriched environment for the animals in their care and a positive place for potential adopters to seek their next pet.

The Wyoming County SPCA is a 501c3 all volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to the humane treatment of animals and supporting a no-kill shelter until loving forever homes for the stray, abandoned and surrendered animals are found.
